Guiding Principles for Our TM1 Team

Throughout my career, I've found that successful reporting and analytics platforms are built on more than technology alone. Whether supporting Financial Planning & Analysis, Enterprise Reporting, or broader Analytics initiatives, teams need a common set of principles that guide decision-making, execution, and long-term sustainability.
The principles below were developed and refined while leading our transition from an on-premise TM1 environment to IBM Planning Analytics Cloud. Over time, they proved valuable far beyond TM1, helping teams simplify complex environments, improve data quality, establish stronger governance, and deliver solutions that create lasting business value.
Originally published in 2018, these guiding principles were created to help our team navigate a major technology transformation. Over the years, I've revisited them many times and have found they remain just as relevant today.
While technologies, platforms, and business priorities continue to evolve, the underlying themes of simplicity, data quality, governance, communication, and execution have consistently proven their value. In many ways, these principles have become part of my broader leadership philosophy and continue to influence how I approach analytics, reporting, technology transformation, and leadership today.
These principles helped guide our transition to IBM Planning Analytics Cloud and provided a consistent foundation for future growth. By emphasizing simplicity, standards, data quality, and clear communication, they helped make the environment easier for users to navigate, easier for teams to support and maintain, and less dependent on individual knowledge. Just as importantly, they created a framework that allowed new team members and future developers to enhance and expand the platform with greater consistency, efficiency, and confidence.
